Divine Discourse by

Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Prashanthi Nilayam

Fear of sin has gone.

Evilness has become a common practice in the world.

Devotion to the Lord of Lakshmi (Vishnu) has gone.

Evil actions that deny description have befallen the world.

Only contemplation on the Feet of the Lord of Lakshmi

Will bring about happiness,

O Man!

Only contemplation on the Name of the Lord of Lakshmi

Will bring about happiness.

(Telugu poem)

The Five Elements Are the Form of God

Embodiments of Love!

This whole moving and unmoving Universe which is seen is called by the name of ‘prapancha’. The main reason it has this name of ‘prapancha’ is because it is composed of the five elements. The form of prapancha is the form of these five elements. Realizing the perfection (Divinity) of the five elements is the fulfillment of man’s meditation. Without these five elements, there would be no world at all.

Even these five elements are the form of God. Therefore, they gave the name to the first element, Earth, as Bhu Devi (Mother Earth). The second element, Water, was given the name of Ganga Devi. The third element, Fire, was called Agni Deva. The fourth element, Air, is Vayu Deva (Wind god). The fifth element, Ether, is Sabdha Brahma (God as Sound).

Shabda Brahma Mayi, Charaachara Mayi,

Jyotir Mayi, Vaak Mayi, Nithyananda Mayi,

Paraat Para Mayi, Maaya Mayi, Sri Mayi.

Brahma is Sound,

Everything mobile and immobile,

Light, Speech, Eternal Bliss,

Almighty, Elusive, and Auspicious.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

These sacred five elements with these titles are sustaining the world. Hence, the five elements are the form of God. These five elements are present in every single life form as the form of Atma. Such an Atma is the form of Divinity. So they say, "Atma Jnanaya Namah" (Salutations to the form of Wisdom, Atma).

Such a Divine, auspicious, ever-fresh nature of Atma is not being recognized by many. It is these five elements of Divinity that are seen by the eye, heard by the ear, and thought by the mind, which create life and make one forget Oneself. No other greater God would be seen if man would understand the meaning, influence, and power of the five elements.

Hence it is said, "Bhur, Bhuvah, Suvaha." Bhur symbolizes materialization. It is entering into (having to do with) matter. Bhuvaha means that which has vayu (air, wind). They call this vibration. The third one, Suvaha, is radiation. This is Supreme Wisdom. In the morning, the pundit (Vedic scholar) taught the symbolism of Dakshinamurthi. Dakshinamurthi represents the form of supremely sacred Wisdom.

Wisdom Pervades Throughout Man

Four Mahavakyas (great spiritual axioms) were determined in the four Vedas and were taught to the world: Prajnana Brahma, Ayam Atma Brahma, Aham Brahmasmi, and Tat Twam Asi. The Vedas extracted these four Mahavakyas (one from each Veda) as four precepts and gave them to the world.

They call one Prajnana Brahma (highest spiritual Knowledge). What is this Prajnana Brahma? Is prajnana that which is read in books? Or is it something experienced by the body? Is it knowledge that is forgotten after a few days? No, no, no, no! This prajnana is a stream that flows always steadily, without wavering, at all times and in all situations. However, they call this ‘Supreme Knowledge’, but this is not the right kind of name for it. It should be translated as ‘Constant Integrated Awareness’. This is changeless. It cannot be modified. Only this is true and shows the path of the future.

This wisdom pervades throughout man. Prajnana also has the name of Vayu Swarupa (the form of air or wind). This means that air pervades everywhere and no place is observed in the world where air is not present. So, God is in the form of air. As He is air and makes it circulate everywhere, He has the name of Vayu Swarupa.

Why doesn’t man recognize such a Divinity that is present everywhere? Why is man not able to recognize Divinity, which is fully all-pervading in the past, present, and future, and in all times and situations? Divinity is moving, but seen as if it is not moving in man and in every living creature also. It is present everywhere, but it is as if it is not there (It is not perceived).

Why isn't man recognizing such a Divinity? Why is he unable to perceive Divinity; which is inside him, outside him, around him, in him, and in everything? Can we observe any man in the world who is searching for himself? How much ignorance it is not being able to recognize himself, even when all is himself!

Therefore, God means that He’s not in any special place. Man keeps on attempting to find Him thinking, ‘God is in some special place. He has to be discovered. He should be seen. He has to be experienced.’ He is going somewhere to search for God even when he himself is God! The five elements are shining in him. When the influence of such sacred five elements contained within his body makes him work, what a stupid and foolish fellow he is to go everywhere, searching for the form of God!

Therefore, it is not possible for any life form to be without Divinity. Every single living being has praana, the life-principle, shining in his nerves. This praana, which is circulating in the nerves, is the form of God. He is Prajnana Brahma. That only is Ayam Atma Brahma. This means ‘I am Atma Brahma.’ ‘Tat Twam Asi,’ means the form that is in himself. Tat Twam Asi means, ‘It is I only who exists.’ Tat means that which is outside. Twam means inside. That, which pervades both inside and also outside, is Divinity, is himself. It is said:

Antar Bihischa Thath Sarvam.

Vyapa Narayana Sthithah.

Inside, outside, everything is That.

Narayana pervades all over.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

So, it is crazy to try to discover or search for such a Divinity. The Chaitanya (Divine Consciousness) in him is the form of God. That which is inside of him can be seen outside. This is said to be reflection, reaction, and resound. Keeping such a Reality within ourselves, why are we searching for a reflection? Why are we aspiring towards resound? This is only madness. Due to such a sacred knowledge (awareness of the Reality) not being in him, man is trying to search everywhere outside.

Master the Mind

Therefore, the name of one year is Prabhava. (Note: Here Swami is referring to the Hindu calendar, which has a 60-year cycle of years, each one given a specific name.) The first year (of this Hindu calendar) is Prabhava. What is the nature of Prabhava? Prabhava means ‘to manifest that which is latent inside.’ Its form is Oneself. He (man) himself is Time. He himself is the director of Time. So why aren’t we recognizing such a master? Therefore, this master is always seen every moment. He is master in every single thing also. It is said:

Master the mind.

Be a mastermind.

You have to control and master that mind first and foremost. All the senses are only that which can be seen outside. This is water. This is fire. This is vayu (Sanskrit word for wind or air). This is air, gaali (Telugu word for wind or air). If these names are observed, they are separate; but all of them are actually within one. He (man) is the master of all of these. That only is:

Master the mind.

You have to remain a mastermind, but you should not be a servant to all the senses. You can understand how many difficulties Kaika, who became a servant to her servant, succumbed too. Kaika was the daughter of the King of Kekaya. A king’s daughter like Kaika became the slave of her servant, Manthara. Kaika listened to what Manthara said. So Kaika lost everything. Finally, she even lost her husband. She made her own son have hatred (towards her). She brought about the criticisms of the world upon herself. Therefore, no one will have the name of such a one, the name of Kaika. What is the reason? She was the master of herself, yet she depended upon another servant. This is the fault.

Therefore, all of us are masters. Every single individual is the form of a master, a master who has the five elements. He is not a master if one of these five elements is missing. Man is keeping such sacred five elements in himself, but is going about like a naïve man, as if he has no power at all. Hence, the master can be seen in every atom and also in every cell. Based on this, in the Vedas it is said:

Anoraneeyaan Mahatomahiyaan.

God is small in the smallest,

Big in the biggest.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

In the small, He is small. In the huge, He is huge. Who is able to recognize the nature of such a Paramatma (Cosmic Self)? Who is able to see the Divinity within himself? Anyone can see. However, his vision is going towards external vision. It is said:

Pashyannapi Cha Napashyati,

Moodho, Moodho, Moodho.

He who sees, yet does not recognize the Reality,

Is a fool, fool, fool!

(Sanskrit Sloka)

All that you see is the form of God. All that you hear is the sound of God. All that you experience is the bliss of God. All that you do are the actions of God. But at a time like this, why are you not able to recognize that nature?

God Has No Differences

God has no differences of ‘this and that’. There’s nothing like, ‘This may be done; this should not be done.’ All is God. Therefore, as every action is God, as every nerve is God, as every atom is God, anything can be done (by Him). The reason? Everything is under His control. There is no master to make the rules of, ‘This may be done; this should not be done.’ It is said:

Janthunaam Nara Janma Durlabham.

Of all life forms,

Human life is the rarest to attain.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

Life as a human being is very difficult to obtain.

Daivam Manusha Rupena.

God is in the form of Man.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

God is in the form of Man. There is no different or bigger form other than this. Everything is contained in that human form. Therefore, we have to recognize such a human nature first and foremost.

No matter what is seen (read), whether in the Sastras (scriptures), Vedas, or Upanishads, it is declared that one can behold God in the form of Man. It is not only that the human form is Truth. (It is not the only form God can take.) So many forms relating to different physical forms are proclaimed and obtained (meaning that God takes many different forms).

If a buffalo wants to worship God, based on his own natural form, it will consider God as a majestically huge form of buffalo. It will take Him as a big form of a buffalo, and thinking, ‘This is God,’ will worship Him as such. Observe a frog. If that frog desires, ‘I want to worship God,’ based on his physical form as a frog, it will feel He (God) is a majestically huge frog. Therefore, based on each being’s natural form, He takes that form.

Therefore, to God there is no difference of whether He should be ‘like this or like that’. Anything can be done (by Him). Nothing is for His own selfishness. It is for others. Whatever is done with such a selfless feeling and resolve, that is God's Sankalpa (intention or resolve) only. No one can consider such a resolve as wrong. There is no one who has seen God, and therefore has the authority to say, "God is like this or that only."

Faith and Confidence

That which is in everything is Paramatma. All forms are that of Paramatma. So, Divinity is all forms and is present in the five elements. We should love such a form of the five elements. The Love in these five elements is the five elements (meaning that Love is present in all the five elements). Hence, we should have faith in such a Divinity, which is the form of the five elements. With that faith, we have to have darshan of our Truth. With this Truth, we can obtain peace, and then we may attain Divinity with peace.

Where there is Confidence, there is Love.

Where there is Love, there is Peace.

Where there is Peace, there is Truth.

Where there is Truth, there is Bliss.

Where there is Bliss, there is God.

What does this mean? When you have the faith that ‘she is my mother’, you will love her. (Note: ‘Faith’ and ‘confidence’ is the same word in Telugu.) Without the faith that ‘she is my mother’, you won't love her at all. Before marriage, who was your wife? You didn’t love anyone (her). After your wedding, due to the faith that ‘she is my wife’, you love her fully. You are feeling that wife is life. That faith has to be developed first and foremost. Only when there is faith, will we attain Divinity. Without faith, we will never attain Divinity. So first and foremost, we have to increase the faith in us in every single matter.

Self-confidence: Only when this Self-confidence comes, one will obtain Self-satisfaction. When Self-satisfaction comes, then only will there be Self-realisation. When Self-realisation comes, you will practice self-sacrifice. What is this sacrifice? It is sacrifice to realise the Truth of "All is me only."

We see a building. What is seen is the building, but what is the basis of this building? That only is the foundation. That foundation is Self-confidence. On this foundation of Self-confidence, we will build the wall of Self-satisfaction. On this wall, we will put the roof of self-sacrifice. Only after putting the roof of self-sacrifice will Self-realisation come. Then it will be possible to live in it. Before putting on the roof, no one can live in it. So, from self-sacrifice only, Self-realisation will be gained. This Self-satisfaction and Self-realisation will arise from the Self-confidence in us.

Man of today has lost Self-confidence. Then on what does he have faith? The one who has lost Self-confidence will become one who has lost everything. Therefore, first and foremost, Self-confidence is needed. Only when such faith is there, will we be able to see the Divine; auspicious Divine light.

The Cosmic Form of the Lord

So, Embodiments of Love!

All are embodiments of God. Wherever there are the five elements, there is the amsa (part or fragment) of God. As there are these five elements, man is God. Therefore:

Daivam Manusha Rupena.

God is in the form of Man.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

Man is one who has the human form. The one with the human form is God. God has no special forms. Some people are worshipping certain forms. (Swami turns around and points to the statue placed behind Him.) Here they keep the form of Dakshinamurthi. That is the form of their feeling only. It is a picture of their imagination, but it is not an actual manifested form.

There are so many forms manifesting besides the human form. In what way should we behold such a Divine Viswaswarupa (Cosmic form of the Lord), God? A certain name was given to this body, which has five elements. The whole Universe is its (the five elements) form. Therefore, they gave the name of ‘Viswamu’: ‘V’ plus ‘swa’ plus ‘mu’ - ‘viswamu’. What does ‘viswam’ mean? That which is created with numerous forms, numerous divisions, numerous objects, and numerous limbs is Viswamu. So, this prapancha (world) that has these five elements was also given the other name of ‘viswamu’. The Veda calls this:

Sahasra Seersha Purushah.

Sahasraksha Sahasra Paad.

Thousands of heads has the Purusha

(the Lord or Supreme Being),

Thousands of eyes, thousands of feet.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

"Sahasra Seersha Purushah."(Thousands of heads has the Purusha.) All heads are the heads of the Purusha (the Lord or Supreme Being). All hands also are the hands of God. Everyone’s hearts are the hearts of God. But due to us not recognizing this Truth, and due to faith only in human nature, we develop the human forms (meaning that we develop human nature instead of Divine nature). No, no! The form is indeed a human form, but you are the embodiment of God. So, in what way should you understand God?

I am God. I am God. I am God

Aham Brahmasmi.

I am Brahman.

 (Sanskrit Sloka)

I am God.

Ayam Atma Brahma.

Prajnanaa Brahma.

Tat Twam Asi.

The Atma is Brahman.

Brahman is the Higher Wisdom.

You are That.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

The form of these four Mahavakyas is ‘I’ only. (Applause) We do not observe these Mahavakyas separately anywhere else. They are to be seen inside us.

Don’t Believe the Changing Forms

See one small example: This is My body. This is My mind. This is My hand. This is My leg. But who am I? Put a question. Think, ‘Who am I?’ You are thinking, ‘This is my entire body.’ You are not the body. ‘My body’ - that body is yours (not you). This is My kerchief. This kerchief is not Me. The kerchief is different and I am different. This is My tumbler. The tumbler is different and I am different.

Hence, you are feeling that all of these are different. (Instead think,) ‘But I am the master of all.’ So, if you recognize this principle of master, this body, mind, heart, senses, conscience, all disappear. All of these are only like instruments. We are experiencing these instruments when working.

This is a plate. We are using it as a plate (or lid for) covering (the glass). This is a tumbler. We are using this tumbler by pouring water into it. This tumbler is silver. This plate is silver. The spoon is silver. All of them are silver. It is not possible to change silver, but the forms may be changed.

In that same manner, the forms of man may change numerously. He is a boy. He is a child. He is a man. He is a grandfather. If one thinks about it, the child, boy, man and grandfather are one and the same. The forms are changing. Don’t believe (don’t go by) these changing forms.

Then the mind: The mind wanders around like a monkey, so we shouldn’t even have faith in (go by) this mind. Hence, this body is only like a water bubble.

Mind is like a mad monkey.

Don’t follow the mind.

Don’t follow the body.

The nature that is the basis for all of these is the Conscience. This Conscience only is Atma. Have faith in that. If only the body, mind, intellect, and senses continue to be believed (relied on), you will succumb to some dangers some day or the other. However, we have to practice suitable actions relating to this body and to this mind. As long as we are in this world consisting of the five elements, the five elements have to be followed. But finally, you should become one of the five elements. That only means you are the sixth element (Divinity). Sound, touch, sight, taste and smell: All these five are unseen forms.

Movement power (the pulsating activity within) is your prajnana (the higher or spiritual knowledge). That only is Prajnanam Brahma. You are such an embodiment of prajnana. It is not worldly knowledge. It is not secular knowledge. It is not discrimination knowledge. All of these have to do with the world. All of these are bookish knowledge.

Yet, your true knowledge is inside yourself. That comes with you when you are born. This is not something that comes after you are born. It is always beside you, with you, inside, below you, outside, and it shows you the path in all ways. Why are you forgetting such a Divinity that is present everywhere? Accordingly, you are succumbing to these difficulties. You are developing these delusions (inside) and they are arising outside as delusion. This delusion is a big maya (illusion). Maya is not separate. It is said:

Samaya Iti Mayah.

All is Maya.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

So, all of this is only maya. Nothing is permanent. All of these are only passing clouds. Passing clouds. Hence your nature of Atma only is permanent. We have to take such a permanent, true, eternal Divinity as an aim. However, as long as there is this physical body, you have to discharge your duties.

Now we have done Paduka Puja (worship of the sandals of the Lord). Why have these padukas (sandals) come? All padukas (sandals, implying feet) go about on the earth. However, the feet are below, but the head (which is above) is very important. Crowns are worn on the head. If we want to take such a valuable head and go somewhere, if the feet do not walk, this head will not move. Yet to recognize such a head, a few outer actions like these kinds of pujas (ritual worship) were decided upon. These padukas carry the head.

Chadrama Manaso Jataha.

Chaksho Suryo Ajayata.

Moon is the presiding deity of the mind;

Sun is the presiding deity of the eyes.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

These eyes are very important. Without the netra (eyes), we would not understand (be able to read) sastra (scriptures). Without drishti (sight), we cannot see srishti (Creation). Therefore, we should consider every single thing only as instruments. Only that. But all of these are not important. All of these are fundamental. However the important, main foundation for all of these is the principle of Atma. We are forgetting such a principle of Atma. We are taking all the physical parts as the basis and we are thus being deluded.

God Does Not Have Narrow Feelings

We are going about in different ways. We are thinking. We are worrying. The main cause for all of this is the nature of the mind only. Our delusion is the main reason for all of this. As long as there is bhrama (delusion), we will not attain Brahma (God). The day that we give up bhrama, that day Brahma will be in our hands (we will attain Brahman). Brahma means ‘one who has the nature of vastness.’ Vishnu means ‘the one who increases vastness.’ Therefore, God is always vast, but does not have narrow feelings. Due to your narrow feelings, you may feel that God is narrow. That is:

Yat Bhavam. Tat Bhavathi

As the feeling, so it becomes.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

Your own narrowness is seen as narrowness in others. God has vast feeling, Infinite Sankalpa. No one can understand it. When it is not possible to understand, calamities increase for man. Forgetting the yathartha (Reality) in these anartha (calamities), man gives up parartha (Divinity). So, we have made these padartha (worldly objects) as the basis. We have not made parartha as the basis. That parartha only is fundamental. All of this (the rest) is only physical (worldly) objects.

You should not make these physical objects as the basis. Keep the mind on them, as in the world the drama has to be performed (the part has to be played). You have to discharge your duties. You have to bear your responsibilities. We have to have faith in that until then (as long as we are here). Truly, if you had faith in God, you would not be able to remember these petty things at all. All are only the five elements. If the nature of these five elements is understood first and foremost, we will easily understand God.

Embodiments of Love!

These five elements are the important praanas (life-breaths) of man. There would be no life without these praanas. Among them, the praana of vayu (air) is all pervading. It is in you, with you, above you, below you, around you. As it is all pervading, it is also all around us. However, we cannot see it. We cannot catch it in our hand. Just because it cannot be caught, just because it cannot be seen, we don’t believe that it does not exist. Just because it cannot be seen, or just because it cannot be caught, one should not say, "No! (It doesn’t exist.)"

Without that breath, how would you be? As long as there is breath, the body is ‘shivam’ (auspiciousness). If this breath goes, the body becomes ‘savam’ (a corpse). Therefore, this breath only is ‘shivam’ (auspicious) for us. This breath is the embodiment of Easwara (Shiva or God). This breath only is the true form of vayu (the element of air). So God is present in man and is protecting man in all ways in this form (of His breath).

God is in the Form of Man

Hence, first and foremost we should not feel that God has some huge form. We create all those forms. We consider that God has four arms and holds in them four objects: shankha (conch), chakra (discus or wheel), gada (mace), and padma (lotus). Was God born with four hands? If He is born with four hands, He may be put in an exhibition, isn't it so? No, no! He has (was symbolically given) four hands to make us recognize that God is all-powerful.

He holds the conch in one hand. That conch only symbolizes Shabda Brahma (God in the form of Sound). He holds the wheel in another hand. That wheel represents kaala chakra (the wheel of Time). So both this Sound and Time are in the hands of God.

In another hand, He holds the mace. Mace represents Strength. Strength also is in the hand of God. The lotus is the Heart. So this also is in the hand of God. This type of form with all of these four insignia was determined (conceived) only to create understanding. So, this is not His true form. The form of man is the permanent form (where God dwells). Such a form is:

Daivam Manusha Rupena.

God is in the form of Man.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

We have to have faith in the form of man: a humanness that is highest, that is sacred, that is the basis for all actions, and which is the basis for everything. We have to put to good use all the senses that were given to us. Then only will you become a true human being. What does ‘human being’ mean? The one who unifies the three (thought, word and deed). It is said:

The proper study of Mankind is Man.

What is that ‘proper study’? The unity of these three: the mind that resolves, the tongue that speaks, and the hands that do work. This is the proper study of mankind. Whatever you have resolved, speak that with the mouth. That which you have spoken with the mouth, do that with your hands. The unity of these three is true Divinity.

Tridalam, Trigunakaram.

Trinetramcha Triyayudham.

Trijanma Papa Samharam.

Eka Bilvam Sivararpanam.

Siva has three attributes.

He is the form of the three qualities.

He has three eyes and holds three weapons.

Offering a three-leafed Bilva leaf to Siva

Will destroy the sins of three births.

(Sanskrit sloka)

Don’t Waste Time

Offer that heart to God. That heart only is your Divinity. Keeping such a Divinity beside us, with us, in us, before us, yet we are wandering about all over. Going about like this is wasting a lot of time. Don’t waste time.

Kaalaya Namah.

Kaalakaalaaya Namah.

Kaala Pramanaya Namah.

Kaalatitaya Namah.

Kaala Swarupaya Namah.

Kaala Nimittaya Namah.

Salutations to He who is Time.

Salutations to the Master of Time.

Salutations to He who standardizes Time.

Salutations to the One who transcends Time.

Salutations to the Embodiment of Time.

Salutations to the One who determines Time.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

All is Time only. This Time is all around you. Hence, why are we so sorrowful when having such a great God around, before, and with us? Therefore, Divinity is not anywhere separate. Wherever actions that sanctify humanness are performed, have faith in that human quality. Always enter into actions that help others.

Hastasya Bhushanam Dhaanam.

The ornament for the hand is charity.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

What greater wealth do we want?

Hastasya Bhushanam Dhaanam.

The ornament for the hand is charity.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

The hand that does charity is the true ornament.

Sathyam Kantasya Bhushanam.

Truth is the ornament for the throat.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

Why was our neck given to us? To put on necklaces? No, it’s not!

Sathyasya Bhushanam.

Truth is the ornament.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

Our throat is given to speak the Truth. Keeping such ornaments with us, we are wishing and aspiring towards other external ornaments. While keeping this valuable bhushana (ornament or jewels, meaning inner ornament of Truth) with us, due to us travelling towards the jewels in the outside world, we are beginning to receive dushana (abuse or criticism). So we should not struggle for dushana. We have to remain in bhushana. This only is the ornament for man, not the ornaments worn on the outside. This is natural. We have to make this the basis.

Do What is Good

Embodiments of Love!

True Love is in all of you. Love never changes. However, keeping such a sacred Love, why are you travelling on the wrong path? You are using this Love on the wrong path, going into worldliness and being subjected to criticism. Don’t be subjected to criticism. We have to become such that others will say, "All right, good," regarding us.

Your whole body should be offered in service. Feel the body is Divine. This is a body that has Divinity as its basis. Why should we make unsacred such a body that is sustained by God? Whatever is done, do good work.

Do good. Don’t do evil.

See no evil. See what is good.

Hear no evil. Hear what is good.

Talk no evil. Talk what is good.

Do no evil. Do what is good.

This is the way to God.

All the limbs given to us should be made sacred. You have to do work with selfless sacrifice. However, we won’t obtain all of this so easily. There will (always) be this or that much selfishness. There is no need to be afraid just because this selfishness exists. There should also be (some) selfishness, but it should be kept under control to a necessary extent.

God is everywhere. We have gone to the ocean (of bliss) and arrived there. We are being immersed in the sea of bliss. Whoever takes this size vessel and goes to the ocean of bliss will fill it with bliss and return. However, we will get only as much water as the container we have. We will obtain this bliss.

Therefore, if we want to obtain more bliss, this container should be enlarged to a bigger size. We have to make it bigger. There should be this expansion Love, but we should not fall into contraction love. This contraction love is death. Expansion Love is Life. We have to develop such a Love. Develop this Love. Moreover, it has to be shared with others. This is the sacrifice in humankind.

Na Karmana,

Na Prajaya, Dhanena,

Thyaaga Naike,

Amritatvam Anasuh.

Not by action,

Not by position or wealth,

Thyaaga (renunciation, sacrifice) alone

Confers Immortality.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

Everything should be sacrificed to God. All is God's. There is nothing that we have that we can give. So:

Lord! The heart that You have given to me,

I offer it again to You.

What else can I offer to Your Feet?

Accept my Salutations!

(Telugu poem)

Therefore, that only is what we should give to God. It is enough to offer that heart, the heart that He gave. However today’s man, today’s learned man, today’s intellectual, is immersed in ignorance.

No matter how much is studied,

He will not give up lowly qualities.

Studying so much will only lead to argumentation.

But he will never attain full Wisdom.

(Telugu Poem)

What is this studying (education) for? Only for filling the stomach (earning a livelihood)? No, no, no!

Studying all education, one finally dies.

The education that grants Immortality should be studied.

(Telugu poem)

No matter how much is studied, doubts keep increasing. He (such a doubting one) is not a true human being at all. The one who has doubts is not a true human being at all. ‘Human being’ means ‘the one without doubt’. He is a true human being, one with a pure heart.

Purnam Adah, Purnam Idam,

Purnat Purnam Udacyate,

Purnasya Purnam Adaya,

Purnam Evavasisyate.

This is Fullness; that is Fullness.

When Fullness is taken from Fullness,

Only Fullness will remain.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

You have to make your heart full (perfected). Then only you will understand your Divinity.

Then He gave eyes to man. Do you know why the eyes were given? To see everything? No, no! They were given to see Divinity. If the eyes are closed in meditation, even when such a God is right in front of you, it is fake meditation. He (such a person) might have been blind in a past birth. Or maybe in a future life, he will become blind.

So, to close the eyes even when God is there is inappropriate meditation for an assembly. Open your eyes and see! With your feeling, also open your eyes of wisdom. Also open up the eyes of wisdom. When the outer eyes are closed, will the eyes of wisdom open? They won't open.

Speak Soft and Sweet Words

Do you know why the tongue was given? To accept tasty morsels? No, no, no, no! It was given to sing the glory of the Lord of Kailash (Shiva or God). Say the Name of God. Always contemplate on Him. Speak good words. Speak beneficial words to others. However, you should not speak just as you please, just because speech is given by God, isn't it?

Those words should not give pain to others. They should not hurt others. Speak soft and sweet words. However, even when soft and sweet words are spoken to a few people, some people won't listen. That is their karma (destiny, fate). Therefore if they listen, they will listen (let them listen). If they go, they will go (let them go). So, sweet words should be said. Divine words should be spoken. If you are not able to speak such words, keep silent.

Mouna Kalahan Nasti.

With silence, there will be no conflict.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

We won't get any conflict from this silence. Such sacred words and looks should be offered to such a sacred Divinity. Truly, man is behaving so foolishly due to not recognizing Divinity properly. The one who recognizes Divinity will not enter onto this foolish path. He only is God. However, if God isn't recognized today, at least tomorrow He has to be recognized. Then he (man) will become a complete human being.

Do Perfect Work

We have to do perfect work. At one time, there was a man in Italy who made violins. This Antony used to make violins. He was unable to complete a violin before one full year. All his friends came and asked, "What is this, brother? If you take one year’s time to make a violin, how can your family live? Is it necessary to take one year to make it? You are taking too much time. You are wasting time."

Then Antony said, "Brother! What I am doing is the work of God. God is the embodiment of Fullness (Perfection). Therefore, the violin that I make also should be perfect. There should not be any off-key or discordant sound. No one should find fault with this. A perfect violin should be made." Accordingly, from that day till today, Antony’s violins are very famous.

God is the Embodiment of Perfection. Therefore, that which we do should be done to satisfy God. Then only your works will be significant. All the works that I (Swami) do are beneficial to others. Then I will become close to them. So I will become their friend. If you want Me to remain friends with you, that which is sweet should be done in the proper way.

Even if there is only a small amount of rice, you have to give to another in the right way. Yesterday, alas, all the boys went to a lot of exertion. They went to villages very far away. They went and distributed food to everyone until ten o’clock in the night and returned. What they did is good work only. However, they become weak in discrimination.

Dear one! (Students!)

When was this food made? We made it in the early morning. They (the students) took it and went. If it is given to the villagers at ten o’clock in the night, it becomes spoiled food, doesn’t it? Were you unable to understand even so much? If you have to, bring the spoiled food back and return. Bring it back. If needed, tomorrow take fresh, good food and go. I told them that doing like this (as they did) is wrong. Then they recognized this. They were immersed in giving, giving! What a shame!

Not only this. They also ate some themselves. Some rest should be taken immediately after eating. It is said:

Sleep awhile after lunch.

After taking this lunch, some rest should be taken. But there was not that rest. What a shame! They ate. Then they carried this much again, and they went around village after village. They didn’t have even one moment of rest. What happened because of that? Stomach churned and unhealthiness arose. Many people had their stomachs churn and fevers came. All things like this happened. Therefore, we have to do work with the proper meaning and with discrimination wisdom. We have to give good, fresh food. God will always give that which is fresh.

I keep giving rings to people. Perfect sizes come. Even if the size is given to a goldsmith, mistakes occur. (Wrong sizes are made.) Yet he is a goldsmith. This (referring to Himself) is a Life-smith! (Applause) Therefore, all should come correctly. Whatever you do, it should be done well and perfect. The one who has got it made should be satisfied. The one who makes it should be satisfied. That is true satisfaction. Satisfaction, satisfaction, satisfaction! The bliss in satisfaction is not anywhere else.

Life as a Human Being is Very Sacred

So, Boy Students and Girl Students!

Today you are youth. Tomorrow you may become adults. You may become mothers and fathers. Hence, develop sacred qualities from today. Also, develop sacred behavior. And develop sacred activities. Then you will become ones who will live a sacred life. Life as a human being is very sacred.

Janthunaam Nara Janma Durlabham.

Of all life forms,

Human life is the rarest to attain.

(Sanskrit Sloka)

What excels this? In the Upanishads, it is said that man is very important. The value of man cannot be estimated. We may compare something to gold and diamonds. Who is giving value to diamonds and gold? Man is giving it. Because man gives the value, diamonds will be bought. Only if man gives the value will gold be bought.

Men are more valuable than all the wealth of the world!

Therefore, there is none more valuable than man. So you should not ruin your value. All of you should develop sacred value. You are making a big mistake. Even in very small matters you are becoming selfish. Fish is better than selfish. A fish goes about in the water. It eats all the dirt in that water. It makes that water clean.

What does this selfish man do? He enters into society and he spoils society, which is sacred. Through what? Through selfishness. There should be some selfishness. However, a limit should be given to it. It is not good if we go on being as selfish as we wish, without that limit. Perform selfless activities. Do sacred actions. Then only you will be ones who have protected your value.

Human being: ‘Human being’ means (Swami pauses)…What a great one is a human being! Manishi (man, human being): ‘Ma-ni-shi’ - if it is turned around it becomes ‘shi-ni-ma’. ‘Ma-ni-shi’ – ‘ci-ne-ma’! Today you have become ‘cinema manishis’! But, true manishis (human beings) are needed.

Manava (an individual, a human being): ‘Ma’ means ‘ajnana’ (ignorance). ‘Na’ means ‘without.’ ‘Va’ means to ‘practice, conduct oneself.’ One who conducts oneself without ignorance is a manava (human being). Therefore, you should become such human beings. Then you will get good reputation from your education.

Go Out and Give Peace

Students!

Spread to the world your fame and good reputation and be a role model to the world. Show to the world with action, trying to put into practice the correct path.

Today the world is in a very chaotic state. Wherever one looks, there is only ashanti (peacelessness). Wherever one looks, there is only sorrow. Wherever one looks, there is only sin. Wherever one looks, there is only wickedness. In a situation like this, at least you should go out and give peace. Therefore, give sacred peace.

Where is this peace? It is inside you only. You are the embodiment of peace. So, although you are having peace like that inside, outloud you are saying, "Peace, peace, peace." If you go outside and look for this "Peace, Peace", how can it be obtained? Only pieces will be obtained. The main cause for this is selfishness. Give up selfishness, choose spirituality, and merge in the Divine. That is the secret in human life. Develop such sacred feelings like this.

Love is our Membership (Fee)

Today the worship to the Feet was done. If the world today is observed a little, one sees that selfishness is arising in this worship of the Feet also. In the past (in ancient days) education was very selfless. Health-care was selfless. However today, education and health have all become selfish. Good should be taught to others. Foster health in others.

So, if any hospital is to be built now, they are building a hospital with selfishness (selfish goals), thinking that a lot of money will come. If a hospital is built for 10 crores, they will expect up to 100 crores (in profits). When a small boy goes to school, what they call kindergarten, 20,000 or 25,000 rupees fees have to be paid. What fate will this type of poor boy face? What a shame! When it is like this, the whole education becomes a matter of money. Health has become all a matter of money.

Yet today in the world, spirituality has also become a matter of money. Spirituality should be free. So much Love should be shared in it. Therefore, in this spirituality also, we should not begin to do business. If we go towards this business, all will become spoiled. The Name of God will also be spoiled.

So, we may take as much as we need to spend. However, I (referring to Himself) will not spend anything on what I do. I won't take from anybody. However, the rest of the people will spend something. What a shame! Now the people from Madurai have spent some money. They spent to come here, for meals, and so on. We should only take what is sufficient for this. Only there should not be any fees for this membership. There should not be some thousands (of rupees) for membership.

What is our membership? Love is the membership for spirituality! (Applause) There is no membership that excels that Love! Hence, give that Love and accept Love. If this is share business, it is not right. We will also be ones who spoil the Name of God. So, if anyone wants to do like this again, take proper notice: I am hoping that a few of our organizations would be established without these fees.

In our education institutions, we don’t take even a naya paisa. All of you know this. We don’t even take examination fees. We don’t even take fees for textbooks. All is free, free, free, free. There is also free education in the hospital. All operations are free. Medicines are all free. We are giving it away to all of them. Truly, if we wish for good and act, money will come to us in some way. (Applause) If we do it aspiring for money, then more loss will come. We should not go in the direction of money.

Money comes and goes.

Morality comes and grows.

(Applause)

We should develop morality like that. We should not take even this or that much fees in spiritual organizations.

Make the World Peaceful

What is the value of the Atma? Who gives it value? So, it is priceless (beyond value). It is Infinite. It is boundless. It is beyond measure, and it does not have a measure. When we embark on such a path, the whole world also will travel towards spirituality. The whole world will turn in the direction of spirituality. Then only the world will be peaceful.

Today, no matter where one goes, there is only ashanti. No matter what newspaper is read, there is only fearful news. Hence, we have to make the country of Bharath into a supremely peaceful one. If we think of (aspire towards) peace, the whole world will also be peaceful. If we are at Peace, the whole world will be in Peace.

So, make the world peaceful. You also live a peaceful life. Also give peace to your fellow human beings and live a peaceful life. Live a full (perfect, complete) life. Like Antony, a perfect violin should be made. All our actions also should be perfect.

However, some people are succumbing to sorrow due to having bad qualities, bad habits, bad feelings, and doing evil actions. They think that they are right. This is foolishness. This is never good. What helps others is good. That is a true life.

Embodiments of Love!

Complete your education with Love, do your job with Love, treat the world kindly with Love, and uphold the good reputation of Bharath.

Bhagavan ended His Divine Discourse by chanting the bhajan,

‘Prema Mudhita Mana Se Kaho…"
